Phillips Academy of Andover, Massachusetts, won the 19th Annual St. Bonaventure University High School Programming Contest by solving all problems correctly. Union-Endicott High School of Binghamton, New York, finished second and Ithaca High School of Ithaca, New York finished third.
Sixteen schools participated in the contest. Each team of up to four students is given a computer, a set of nine problems, and three hours to write computer programs to solve. "This is the closest contest we have had in years," said Dr. David Levine, the author of the problems and head contest judge. "More impressive, each team solved at least one problem, and every problem was solved by multiple teams."
The team solving the greatest number of problems is the contest winner. If teams solve the same number of problems the team solving them in the least amount of time wins.
