Homework
- "If you took all of the hamburgers McDonalds has ever sold and spread them out on the ground (as a carpet), how much area would they cover? Your dorm room? A football field? Campus? The town of Olean? The county? The state? The continental U.S? North America? The world? How deep on the world?" Write up a short answer detailing your assumptions and how you used them to reach your conclusions. Helpful estimating data. Whereas McDonalds now claims "Billions and billions served" on their signs, they used to keep a counter that periodically went up. Alas, the counter had only two digits. Some time in the 1980's, it switched to saying "Over 99 billion served" before assuming its current form. Once you have answered that, use some of your 'partial estimates' to indicate how high the stack would be if you piled all of the hamburgers on top of one another. (Don't worry about the pile tipping over.) Finally, indicate how big the volume would be, i.e. if you put them all in a large container, how big would it be? In each of the latter cases, relate the size to a known quantity - as done in earlier assignments. Due Nov. 16.
- How long would it take you to fill the hard disk on your computer by typing words? Determine an estimate and indicate how you arrived at it.
- If you took all of the toothpaste that a typical person (you?) would use in a lifetime and squeezed it out into one single, long, strand, how long would that strand be? Determine your answer through the ideas of estimation discussed in class, and turn in a brief write-up including your assumptions, the value that you determine, and an explanation of how you determined that value. Due Nov. 9
