Homework
- Resubmit of McDonalds assignment, due 12/9 in class.
- Bring your finals schedule (or know it) to class on 12/2.
- "If you took all of the hamburgers McDonalds has ever sold and spread them out on the ground (as a carpet), how much area would they cover? Your dorm room? A football field? Campus? The town of Olean? The county? The state? The continental U.S? North America? The world? How deep on the world?" Write up a short answer detailing your assumptions and how you used them to reach your conclusions. Helpful estimating data. Whereas McDonalds now claims "Billions and billions served" on their signs, they used to keep a counter that periodically went up. Alas, the counter had only two digits. Some time in the 1980's, it switched to saying "Over 99 billion served" before assuming its current form. Once you have answered that, use some of your 'partial estimates' to indicate how high the stack would be if you piled all of the hamburgers on top of one another. (Don't worry about the pile tipping over.) Finally, indicate how big the volume would be, i.e. if you put them all in a large container, how big would it be? In each of the latter cases, relate the size to a known quantity - as done above. Your write-up is due at 9 a.m. on 12/2.
- Note Taking assignment, due by 4 p.m. on 12/9.
- Three Questions assignment, due by 4 p.m. on 12/9.
- Clare Worksheet (handed out in class), due in class on 10/7.
- In your electronic mail, you should have received a copy of RISKS DIGEST, Volume 22, Issue 91. You are to read it and write a reaction paper, due by 9:00 a.m. on 10/2.
- Visit the Career Center web page. Follow the link for Type Focus and take the personality assessment. At the conclusion of that assessment, you will be given a four-letter code describing your personality type. Send an email message with that code to dlevine@cs.sbu.edu. The message must be received by 8:30 a.m. on 9/23.
- Complete the Schedule assignment, due 9/11.
- Complete the Headlines worksheet for class on 9/4.
- Send an email to dlevine@cs.sbu.edu from whatever email account is most likely to reach you should I need to contact you in a hurry. Include your name, something I can remember about you, and a decent joke.
